Truong Tien Bridge to close nightly for repair

Hue’s iconic Truong Tien Bridge will be closed to all traffic overnight from June 1 as authorities begin a 150-day repair project on the more than century-old structure.

Vietnam’s Road Administration said the repair works would officially start on June 1 after approval by the Vietnam Road Administration.

Authorities said traffic would be completely banned on the bridge from 9 pm to 5 am daily during the construction period. Vehicles travelling between the northern and southern banks of the Huong River during those hours will be diverted to nearby bridges including Phu Xuan, Da Vien and Cho Dinh.

According to project managment board, several parts of the bridge have shown signs of deterioration due to ageing and weather impacts.

The project will focus on repairing corroded steel components, restoring damaged structural sections and repainting the entire steel structure to limit further deterioration and extend the bridge’s operational lifespan.

One pedestrian walkway on the bridge will also be fully closed to accommodate construction equipment and materials, while the remaining side will remain open for public use.

Construction could be temporarily suspended during major cultural or tourism events related to Truong Tien Bridge.

Built between 1897 and 1899 during the reign of Emperor Thanh Thai and designed by French firm Eiffel, Truong Tien Bridge was the first bridge spanning the Huong River and remains one of Hue’s best-known cultural landmarks.

The bridge consists of six steel spans, each measuring 67 metres in length, linking present-day Phu Xuan Ward on the northern bank with Thuan Hoa Ward on the southern side of Hue.
