Authorities in Quang Tri Province are working to remove dozens of tonnes of debris and waste that washed onto Nhat Le Beach after days of heavy rain and flooding, affecting the area's environment and coastal landscape.
Large quantities of rubbish, driftwood, tree branches and rotting logs were found scattered along sections of the beach on September 15 following prolonged rainfall and rising river flows from upstream areas.
In some locations, layers of debris stretched across the shoreline, while large piles of wood and household waste accumulated near the water's edge and across the sandy beach.
Dang Ngoc Hung, director of the Dong Hoi Ward General Services Centre, said the waste had been carried downstream by floodwaters before being deposited along the coast by waves and tides.
"Due to prolonged heavy rainfall and large volumes of water flowing from upstream areas, dozens of tonnes of waste, driftwood and rotting timber have washed ashore and accumulated across Nhat Le Beach," Hung said.
In response, local authorities convened an emergency meeting and launched a clean-up operation to collect and transport the waste, wood and debris away from the beach.
Officials said the task remains challenging as adverse weather conditions continue and additional debris is still being brought ashore by waves in successive batches.
The clean-up effort aims to restore environmental hygiene and preserve the appearance of one of Quang Tri's best-known coastal tourism areas.
