U.S. and Vietnam reach long term industrial relations agreement

The U.S. will support Vietnam in initiatives put forth to strengthen industrial relations within the country.

The U.S. will support Vietnam in initiatives put forth to strengthen industrial relations within the country.

USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development) in conjunction with the Ministry of Labor Invalids, and Social Affairs, announced an official agreement today in Hanoi, signing a cooperative Memorandum of Understanding.

The project, funded by USAID, is titled, “Supporting Implementation of Labor Laws  and Promotion of Sound Industrial Relations in Vietnam’. The funding from USAID will flow until September 2011.

U.S. Ambassador Michael W. Michalak shared, “We are encouraged to see that the Government of Vietnam is also expressing increased interest in creating a sound industrial relations system that will serve the country well as it continues to target economic growth and attract investment.” 

According to a U.S. Embassy official statement, the initiative is a, “Common vision for industrial relations among the Minstry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affaris (which sets government labor policies and oversees compliance with labor regulations), the Vietnamese General Confederation of Workers (Which is the country’s official trade union), and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 

The project is also designed to develop a national strategy in order to train labor inspectors and create a greater awareness of workers rights.
