Prolonged rain on September 22 overwhelmed drainage systems in parts of the island, causing flooding on low-lying roads in central Duong Dong, including Nguyen Trung Truc, Mac Cuu and Tran Hung Dao streets.
Floodwaters made travel difficult, with some motorbikes stalling on deeply inundated sections. Businesses and residents along affected roads were also disrupted.
According to the weather agency of An Giang Province, widespread rain had affected the province over the previous 24 hours, with moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms reported in several areas.
Waters around Phu Quoc and Kien Hai are forecast to receive 100-150 mm of rain over the next 48 hours. Authorities warned of thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and flooding in low-lying areas and along rivers and canals.
Phu Quoc authorities deployed workers to clear rubbish and other obstructions from drains and manholes to help floodwaters recede. They also directed traffic, assisted residents through flooded areas and installed warning signs.
Residents and tourists were advised to monitor weather forecasts, avoid fast-flowing water and take precautions in flood-prone areas.
