On May 13, the Military Command of Duc Hue District in Long An Province, working with relevant agencies, safely removed and neutralised the unexploded bomb, which was found in a garden in Binh Hoa Nam Commune.
According to local authorities, the bomb was uncovered on the afternoon of May 10 by 46-year-old Ho Van Dang while digging a trench next to his house. Dang struck a hard object and, suspecting it was a bomb, immediately reported it to the District Military Command.
The Duc Hue District military unit, along with provincial forces, arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area and evacuated nearby residents to ensure safety.
On inspection, authorities identified the object as an MK82 bomb, an American-made general-purpose bomb weighing more than 200kg, left over from the war. It was found to be highly volatile and capable of detonation.
The military’s bomb disposal unit later moved the device away from the residential area and destroyed it safely.
The MK82 weighs about 227kg, measures 2.2 metres in length and 27cm in diameter. If it fails to detonate on impact, it can remain buried underground for decades while still retaining its explosive potential.
