India has officially approved imports of fresh durian from Vietnam, opening a new export market for one of the country's most valuable fruit products.
According to the Embassy of India in Hanoi, the Indian government has issued the fifth amendment to the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Order, 2026, under Notification No. S.O. 3828(E).
Under the revised regulations, Vietnam has been added to the list of countries authorised to export fresh durian for consumption in the Indian market.
Notably, India does not require any additional phytosanitary declarations on the phytosanitary certificate and has imposed no special import conditions on fresh Vietnamese durian.
The market opening follows extensive technical consultations and cooperation between the plant protection authorities of the two countries, creating new export opportunities for one of Vietnam's leading agricultural products.
India is widely regarded as a high-potential market due to its population of more than 1.4 billion, a rapidly expanding middle class and growing demand for high-quality imported food and agricultural products.
Official access to the Indian market also comes as Vietnam accelerates efforts to diversify its export destinations and reduce reliance on several traditional markets.
Vietnam's durian exports reached approximately USD 3.86 billion in 2025, accounting for more than 45 per cent of the country's total fruit and vegetable export value. The industry is targeting USD 4.5 billion in exports this year.
Despite the new opportunity, India remains a relatively untapped market for Vietnamese durian. During the initial phase, exports are expected to target consumers in major cities through premium retail chains, imported fruit stores, restaurants, hotels and e-commerce platforms.
