The VND 2.4 trillion (USD 91.5 million) project is on schedule for completion by October 31, with calibration flights for the runway's navigation systems expected to take place in September.
Once the airport reopens, Vietnam Airlines plans to operate the Ca Mau–Ho Chi Minh City route using Airbus A321 aircraft. The carrier is also studying the feasibility of launching flights between Ca Mau and Hanoi.
Construction crews are completing the runway, taxiway and aircraft apron, while work on drainage systems, perimeter fencing and patrol roads is progressing alongside the new passenger terminal.
The upgrade will allow the airport to accommodate Code C aircraft, including the Airbus A320 and A321, with an annual capacity of one million passengers and 1,000 tonnes of cargo by 2030.
