Vinh Long races to repair coastal erosion damage

Authorities in Vinh Long Province are racing to repair coastal erosion damage after high tides flooded more than three hectares of farmland and fish ponds, affecting nine households.

The erosion occurred on the evening of October 27 in Thanh Thoi B Hamlet, Thanh Hai Commune, damaging two stretches of coastline measuring a combined 170 metres.

Le Van Tien, secretary of the commune's Party Committee, said high tides had caused erosion along two sections measuring approximately 120 metres and 50 metres, allowing seawater to flood farmland, crops and aquaculture ponds.

Local authorities immediately mobilised machinery, personnel and residents to build a temporary embankment to prevent further flooding.

By early October 28, the embankment was largely completed, with around 120 metres of the damaged coastline temporarily reinforced. Workers continued strengthening vulnerable sections to prevent further erosion.

One household in a high-risk area was evacuated, while residents were warned against entering or staying in dangerous locations.

Major Tran Van Hien, deputy commander of Ham Luong Border Guard Station, said border guards had joined local authorities and residents in emergency repairs.

They used waterproof sheeting to reinforce the embankment, raised its height at vulnerable points and encouraged households facing high risks to move to safer areas.

With further erosion possible, Thanh Hai Commune has requested emergency funding from the provincial government to reinforce vulnerable coastal sections.

Local authorities have also called for long-term coastal protection measures to safeguard residential areas, farmland and property.

Border guards urged residents to remain alert to erosion risks and promptly report any signs of further damage.
