Heavy rain swept across Hanoi during the evening rush hour on July 31, inundating several streets and causing widespread traffic disruption.
According to the Hanoi Sewerage One Member Limited Liability Company, thunderstorms affected large parts of the capital during the afternoon.
Rainfall recorded by 6.30 pm reached 115mm in Long Bien Ward, 72mm in Gia Lam Commune, 65mm in Vinh Tuy Ward, 55mm in Yen So Ward, 48mm in Linh Nam Ward, and 35mm in Thanh Tri Commune.

The downpour coincided with the evening commute, leaving roads including Dam Quang Trung Street and Vinh Hung Street in Long Bien Ward under 30-40 centimetres of floodwater. The flooding triggered severe traffic congestion across the area.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said scattered showers and thunderstorms affected the Northeast, southern parts of Phu Tho Province, and areas stretching from Thanh Hoa Province to Hue City on July 31, with some locations recording heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Rainfall totals included 61mm at Yen Hoa in Tuyen Quang Province, 56mm at Mong Cai in Quang Ninh Province, 52mm at Doan Ket in Phu Tho Province, 41mm at Dai Tu in Thai Nguyen Province, and 65mm at Thong Nhat in Thanh Hoa Province.

Forecasters said scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue across northern Vietnam and the provinces of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An through August 1, with rainfall of 10-30mm and isolated totals exceeding 60mm.
Coastal areas of Quang Ninh Province, Haiphong City, Hung Yen Province, Ninh Binh Province, Thanh Hoa Province and Nghe An Province could receive more than 100mm of rain in some locations.
