Sluggish road project in Nghe An leaves residents in misery

Residents in some communes in Nghe An Province have been struggling to commute along a miserable road for two years.

Local residents in Nghe An Province’s Quy Hop District are struggling to commute along a miserable road that has remained half-finished for around two years.

Construction of a 25-kilometre road started in February 2010 with an aim of connecting the three communes of Chau Dinh, Van Loi and Ha Son. However, until now only a kilometre of road and some bridges have been built, leaving the rest to turn into a muddy track of misery in rainy weather.

Local people have suffered the quagmired road for several months as prolonged rain has continued to lash the area since December 2011.

Vi Thi Tuyet, a local woman in Van Loi Commune, said, “Everyday we have to walk through this muddy road as it’s really difficult to drive a motorbike or ride on a bicycle in such conditions. Contractors held a grand groundbreaking ceremony but have done almost nothing since then.”

The unfavourable transportation route has kept a lot of preschool and primary students in these communes from accessing education for months. Those who can go to school often return home bedraggled.

Quy Hop District also has two other miserable roads due to suspended construction work, including a 16-kilometre route connecting Chau Loc, Lien Hop and Chau Tien Communes, and another 14-kilometre road that links Nghia Xuan, Van Loi and Ha Son Communes.
