| Strikes becoming an increasing problem |
At a recent conference in Hanoi, Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (Molisa) reported more than 4,100 labour strikes since 1995, 75.4% of them happening under foreign-invested companies.
The labour strike number has been on the rise in Vietnam since 2006. Last year had also set a record, with 857. There were 422 in 2010, 218 in 2009 and 720 in 2008.
According to the Molisa, none of strikes has followed legal procedures, although 70% of them took place at companies with trade unions.
The ministry noted that often they broke out because businesses did not abide by labour law. Many do not sign labour contracts with their employees, pay social insurance or offer leave for the staff. The shortage of labour at many of the industrial parks also leads employees to believe that they will not be fired if they go on strike.
Nguyen Thien Nhan, Deputy Prime Minister, said that these strikes are of great concern, and urged Molisa to take action to deal with the problem and submit it's results in March.
