New Covid-19 cases in Vietnam rise sharply

Vietnam has continued to report a sharp rise in the number of daily Covid-19 infections with over 42,000 more cases confirmed on Friday, according to the Ministry of Health.

According to the ministry's report, 42,427 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in all 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (4,549), Vinh Phuc (2,158), Quang Ninh (2,018), Phu Tho (1,789), and Nam Dinh (1,678). There were 12 imported cases confirmed the same day.

The new infections showed an increase of 6,237 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 31,028 infections found in the community.

As of Friday evening, 2,678,241 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (518,295), Binh Duong (293,645), Hanoi (188,373), Dong Nai (100,410), and Tay Ninh (88,938). Vietnam has so far confirmed 200 Omicron-infected cases.

With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 2,685,463. The country now stands 32nd among 225 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.

On February 18, an additional 6,215 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 2,261,180.

On Friday evening, a further 80 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 39,358. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including Hanoi (12), Danang (8 ), Kien Giang (7), HCM City (5), and Quang Ngai (5).

Vietnam on February 17 administered 1.86 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines, raising the total number of conducted doses to over 190.21 million.
