A petrol station closes after running out of supplies on Phu Quy Island on January 5.
On January 5, Lam Dong Province’s Department of Industry and Trade said the provincial People’s Committee had asked Military Region 7 to temporarily supply fuel to businesses operating petrol stations on Phu Quy Island to meet residents’ daily needs.
Later the same day, fuel reserves managed by Military Region 7 provided about 5,000 litres of petrol and diesel to local stations to ensure essential services continued.
Earlier the same day, residents of Phu Quy Special Zone were unable to purchase fuel for daily activities and production after all petrol stations on the island ran out of supplies.
The island has three privately owned fuel stations, all dependent on deliveries from the mainland by cargo vessels. In recent days, strong northeast winds of levels 6-7, gusting to level 8, with waves of 3-5 metres, have prevented fuel ships from operating.
Phu Quy Special Zone covers about 16 square kilometres and is home to roughly 32,000 people. Located 56 nautical miles from the mainland, the island relies mainly on sea transport for external connections.
