Made-in Vietnam container houses new option for low income housing

People with limited budget will have better opportunity to own a house with a container housing project being launched.

Local people with a limited budget will have a better opportunity to own a house with a container housing project being launched soon to the real-estate market.

A container house offered for VND 269 million (USD 13,400)

Mai Hoang Tuan, director of Hung Dao Container Joint Stock Company, responsible for the project, said that each container house would cost between VND 100-300 million (USD 5,000-15,000).

“With that sum of money, people can own a house with 1 living room, 2 bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom with full facilities including armchairs, refridgerator, kitchen utensils, television and air-conditioner; a true home,” he said.

Container houses can be built in a very short time, about one-tenth of the time taken for building the same type of house with traditional materials. It can also have a life time of about 30 years. When people do not want to live in the home, they can sell it back to the company for at least 50% of its total cost.

“This kind of house will be an ideal option for people on a tight budget,” Tuan said. “In addition, we also target students living far from their home.”

He also revealed that his customers would have various choices regarding the size of their houses. “We had built a 500 square-metre villa from 28 containers in Ho Chi Minh City.”

Hung Dao Container Company previously made offices made from containers available. These models are new in Vietnam but can be found all over the world.

The company just introduced their new products at the 2010 Real Estate Exhibition in Da Nang City earlier in December, which attracted much attention from people.

These models are expected to contribute to the development of the social housing fund and assist in providing housing for low-income families as well as serve community service purposes in Da Nang and some other provinces in the central region. In particular, this will be a solution for quickly creating temporary housing funds for households to move from emergency buildings, old apartments or site-clearance households waiting for resettlement.
