Nguyen Thi Huong said she had had to deal with heart disease for a long time and thought that she would die for sure. Luckily, she was admitted to a charity programme and had free surgery."I still have to go to hospital for check-ups and take medicines. My health has deteriorated greatly and I can't do heavy work anymore," she said.
But when Huong's health started to get better, her husband, Nguyen The Tha, fell ill. He often coughs and became significantly weaker. Without money, he stayed home and tried to cure his illness with herbal leaves. However, his condition became so bad that neighbours donated money to help him go to hospital. He was diagnosed with lung cancer at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital in Hanoi.
"We just couldn't believe it. Doctors said he was already in the second stage and must be admitted immediately. But we didn't have any money and decided to go home," Huong said.
Tha is the family's breadwinner but as he is ill and Huong's health is still weak, they are struggling to support their four-member family.
Head of Buong Ha Bac Village, Vu Dang Loc, said, "The villagers are calling for donations for Tha's family. Tha is a good man and everyone likes him."
"If I die, I just hope that my wife will survive and my two children won't be hungry," Tha said.
