Ho Chi Minh City students return to school for new academic year

Students across Ho Chi Minh City returned to school on August 25 after the summer break, marking the start of the 2025–2026 academic year.

The citywide opening ceremony will take place on September 5. The first semester begins the same day, the second semester starts on January 19, 2026, and the school year ends before May 31, 2026.

At a recent meeting on general education tasks, Nguyen Van Hieu, director of the municipal Department of Education and Training, stressed the need to regulate extra classes, build “happy schools”, and ensure sufficient teacher recruitment and two-session teaching.

This school year, Ho Chi Minh City has more than 2.5 million students, an increase of over 39,600 compared with last year. They include 478,458 kindergarteners, 939,002 primary pupils, 759,278 secondary students, and 352,051 high school students.
