The plan being conducted by the city’s Management Board of Industrial and Civil Engineering Construction and Investment Projects is expected to be submitted to the municipal people’s committee for approval soon.
Many parts of Ben Thanh Market have deteriorated over the past 110 years, such as the roof and electricity system.

Ben Thanh Market was built in 1912 and put into operation in 1914. The 13,000-square metre market is situated in District 1.

It is among HCM City’s most famous tourist destinations.

The upgrade will focus on repairing the market floor and the water supply, drainage, lighting and power supply systems; boosting fire safety capacity as well as adjusting the roof height for better ventilation and lighting.

The damaged iron roof will be replaced with tiles.

Lighting and fire prevention and control systems need to be upgraded to ensure safety.

However, the facelift will not affect the architecture of the four entrances.

Nguyen Hoang Hai, a market trader, said that he is very happy to know that the market will get a facelift.
Ben Thanh Market has 1,442 stalls with thousands of traders.
The market was previously repaired in 1985.
Ben Thanh Market is located near the entrance to the HCM City’s Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro line which is almost finished. The four-floor station is also connected to the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong and Thanh Xuan-Hiep Phuoc metro lines that are still under construction.
