The route connects the Van Cao-Hoang Hoa Tham intersection and Thach Binh Station in Hoa Lac, covering a total length of about 39.6 kilometres.
The project runs through Tay Ho, Ngoc Ha, Giang Vo, Lang, Yen Hoa, Tu Liem, Dai Mo, Tay Mo, Xuan Phuong wards, and the communes of Son Dong, Duong Hoa, An Khanh, Quoc Oai, Kieu Phu, Tay Phuong, Ha Bang, Yen Xuan, and Hoa Lac.

In addition, the project includes two branches connecting to Depot 1 in Son Dong and Duong Hoa communes, as well as Depot 2 in Hoa Lac Commune, with a total branch length of approximately 4.8 kilometres.
The line comprises 20 stations, with six underground, three elevated, and eleven at grade. Most of them will be located along Thang Long Avenue and the Hoa Lac-Hoa Binh Expressway.
Notably, several stations will offer direct links to other urban railway lines, including lines 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8, helping to form a fully interconnected transit network.
Metro Line 5 has investment of over VND 61.9 trillion (around USD 2.4 billion).
