Da Thi My and Ngo Van Thang (left to right)

Ngo Van Thang is a 3rd-grade student at Tran Quoc Toan Primary and Secondary School. He's living with her grandmother and their meals mostly have just rice and men men (a variety of corn grown by H'mong people) as they can hardly afford to buy meat or even vegetables.

Thang lives with his grandmother in a dilapidated tent that can hardly protect them from the wind or rain and may collapse at any time.

Da Thi My, Thang's grandmother, said when Thang was two years old, his father left. Three months later, his mother also left due to poverty. Since then, My has struggled to raise Thang on her own. Thang rarely mentions his parents and does not show any emotion when talks about them.

"They all left. His mother at least calls us once a year but I never heard anything from his father again. Thang has never met his parents. Sometimes, we have nothing but water to live by," she said. "Some of our most valuable belongings are probably these three pots. Two of them are borrowed from neighbours."

My works on the fields for other people for just tens of thousands of VND a day. But as the wage is paid at weekends, they sometimes do not have anything to eat during the week.

Do Thi Ha, Thang's homeroom teacher, said, "Their tent is set up on other people's land. Our teachers donate VND300,000 a month to help Thang. But Dak Ha Commune has many poor households so there's nothing much we can help."

If you can help please donate through:
