After conducting a survey of household kitchens in 10 cities, Vietnam Military Medical University has given out a stark warning about hygiene.

The survey showed that 23.2% of surveyed families in urban areas placed their kitchens nearby sources of pollution, such as drainage systems, open-air gas cellars and dustbins. The rate was 15.9% among rural families.
Many households use the same chopping-board for both raw and cooked food.
Flies, mosquitoes and ants were found in one fifth of kitchens of rural families. A tenth food processing establishments also were found to have unhygienic practices which could spread diseases.
The survey also indicated that one-third of raw vegetables in urban areas and one fifth in rural areas are contaminated by E.coli.
One fourth of gio lua or lean pork paste in rural areas, and one fifth in urban areas, were found to be infected with E.coli.
