Six Vietnamese fishing boats in southern Kien Giang Province have been attacked by alleged pirates near Thai territorial waters.

Fisherman Nguyen Hung Cuong, who is being treated at Kien Giang General Hospital, was shot in the leg.
"We were working like usual over a fishing spot near the Thai maritime border on September 11 when an armed ship headed straight towards us. We tried to move back but they chased and shot at us," Cuong said.
Do Nhat Nam, another fishermen, said there were at least five masked people on the attacking ship.
Five other fishing boats in Kien Giang Province were surrounded and fired on, killing one fisherman.
Cuong said he suspected the attackers were pirates, who overpower fishing boats and hold them for ransom of VND2bn (USD95,000) to VND3bn.
