According to Nguyen Duc, deputy director of Biet Dien Tourism Centre, the case occurred on Sunday when a woman from the northern province of Hung Yen and her two children were riding a female elephant at the centre.
The 32-year-old female elephant was hit by a male behind, causing three people to fall on the ground. The mother's head collided with a piece of rock, resulting in injuries. Right after that, she was hospitalised.
“This is the first incident of this kind in the centre which has been temporarily suspended,” Duc added.
Nguyen Quang Son from Central Highlands General Hospital said that the patient has suffered from injuries in chest, lung and limbs. She will be moved to a hospital in HCM City for the treatment.
Earlier on May 22, a mahout was also killed by a 48-year-old male elephant.
Dak Lak authorities have issued many documents to ask travel companies and mahouts to use elephants safely.
