Specialised drones are stringing pilot lines along two new 110kV transmission lines in Phu Quoc, speeding up construction and reducing risks to workers.
Carrying lightweight pilot lines, the drones fly along transmission routes, crossing dense forest and threading the lines through transmission towers. The method replaces much of the labour-intensive manual work previously required in difficult-to-access areas.
Before each flight, workers prepare the pilot-line reels, equipment and tools to ensure the operation is carried out safely and accurately.
With drones, stringing a pilot line across each tower location now takes about 10-20 minutes.
Once in position, the pilot lines are used to pull stronger cables and eventually the heavier conductors, gradually forming Phu Quoc's new 110kV transmission network.
Using drones not only shortens construction time but also reduces manual labour and risks for workers in difficult terrain, including hills, forests, rivers and streams.
Le Thanh Y, a contractor representative for the Phu Quoc-North Phu Quoc line, said drones had eased line stringing across difficult terrain and privately owned land, cutting construction time and boosting productivity two to threefold.
Drone operator Do Duy Dinh said each aircraft could carry 50-70 kilogrammes over long distances, transporting materials, food and water to tower sites as well as stringing pilot lines.

Phu Quoc currently relies on two separate 110kV power sources, creating a risk of localised outages if either fails. The new projects will provide backup capacity and improve supply reliability under the N-1 contingency standard.
Contractors are working to complete the Phu Quoc 220kV substation and two 110kV transmission lines, with energisation targeted for August to strengthen power supplies and support preparations for APEC 2027.
Once completed, the three projects will increase Phu Quoc's total power supply capacity to 315MVA, supporting growing demand from businesses, services, tourism and residents while improving the reliability and security of the island's electricity supply.
