Cold spell to hit Ho Chi Minh City next week

A new cold wave is expected to affect southern Vietnam next week, likely pushing early morning temperatures in Ho Chi Minh City below 19 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures in parts of the city dropped under 19 degrees Celsius this morning, November 28. Meteorologist Le Thi Xuan Lan said a low of 19 degrees Celsius was recorded at Tan Son Nhat station on the night of November 27.

The current 19-20 degrees Celsius conditions are forecast to persist through today as a northern cold surge spreads south. From November 29 to December 1, the cold air mass will weaken, with temperatures in Ho Chi Minh City rising slightly and staying above 20 degrees Celsius overnight and in the early morning.

Another strong cold surge is expected to bring temperatures back below 19 degrees Celsius at dawn on December 3-4.

Lan said this is not yet the coldest period of the year for Ho Chi Minh City. From Christmas to after New Year, temperatures typically fall further. Cu Chi Commune is expected to feel the chill most clearly as it borders cooler areas of Tay Ninh and the Southeast region, while Nha Be and Can Gio remain warmer under marine influence.

In the Mekong Delta, most locations will stay above 20 degrees Celsius, except places such as Chau Doc in An Giang and Cao Lanh in Dong Thap, which may fall below that level.

Lan noted that this year’s cold spells have arrived earlier and with stronger intensity than usual, bringing prolonged rains and flooding to central Vietnam in November.

Cold, dry conditions in the coming months may worsen air quality in Ho Chi Minh City due to fine dust, emissions, and construction activity. Clear skies will also increase UV levels.

People, especially children and the elderly, are advised to keep warm, wear masks to limit exposure to fine dust and UV, avoid early-morning outings, and monitor respiratory and heart health during colder days.
