Bosses and builders have been found responsible for the collapse of a bridge in Lai Chau Province last year that killed eight people and injured another 38.
Collapsed bridge builders jailed
Former director of Hoa Ky Private Construction Company, Nguyen Van Ky, former deputy head of Tam Duong District Project Management Board, Hoang Dinh Van, and technical supervisor of the district Project Management Board Bui Hai Son were convicted of violating construction regulations and reckless endangerment.
Lai Chau court ruled the defendants must pay VND700m in compensation to victims and VND450m to Tam Duong District.
Ky and Son were sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment and banned from working in the construction field for five years. Van was sentenced to three years' prison and banned from the construction field for two years.
On February 24, 2014, Chu Va 6, a 58-metre suspension bridge collapsed while a funeral procession was crossing the rocky gorge it spanned. The accident killed eight and left 38 injured.
Transport Minister Dinh La Thang said screws and bolts used in the construction process were not up to standard and led to the collapse of the bridge.
