All swans at Hanoi’s Thien Quang Lake found dead

All 12 swans that had been raised at Hanoi’s Thien Quang Lake have died, according to the lake’s management board.

The swans, five white and seven black, were originally introduced to Hoan Kiem Lake in February 2018. However, following public controversy over their presence in the historic lake, they were relocated to Thien Quang Lake just one day later.

Imported from Belgium and Poland, the swans initially roamed freely before being confined to a fenced area at a corner of the lake near Nguyen Du Street. Their wings were partially clipped to prevent them from flying ashore. The birds were fed twice daily with bran and vegetables, and received monthly veterinary check-ups.

All swans at Hanoi’s Thien Quang Lake found dead - 1

A flock of 12 swans raised in Thien Quang Lake in Hanoi have all died

Despite an attempt to breed the swans in 2019, during which they laid around a dozen eggs, no chicks were successfully hatched.

The Thien Quang Lake management board attributed the swans' deaths to their inability to adapt to the local environment.

Located in Hai Ba Trung District, Thien Quang Lake spans approximately five hectares and is bordered by Tran Nhan Tong, Quang Trung, Nguyen Du, and Tran Binh Trong streets.
