An additional 16,838 Covid-19 infections were confirmed in Vietnam on Tuesday and Hanoi continued to record the highest number with nearly 3,000 patients, the Ministry of Health has reported.
According to the ministry's report, 16,763 of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in all 63 localities in the country with five localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi (2,935), Hai Phong (1,139), Danang (943), Tra Vinh (638), and Binh Dinh (582). There were 75 imported cases confirmed the same day.
The new infections showed an increase of 438 cases compared to yesterday's figure. There were 12,151 infections found in the community.
As of Tuesday evening, 2,055,722 infections had been reported since the new outbreak occurred in the country in late April. Some localities that have recorded the highest number of patients include HCM City (511,687), Binh Duong (292,180), Dong Nai (99,388), Hanoi (94,117), and Tay Ninh (86,067). Vietnam has so far confirmed 70 Omicron-infected cases.
With these new infection cases, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to 2,062,128. The country now stands 28th among 224 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections.
On January 18, an additional 8,692 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 1,756,154.
On Tuesday evening, a further 184 deaths related to Covid-19 were announced, bringing the total number of fatalities in Vietnam to 35,972. The high fatalities were reported in some localities including Dong Thap (30), HCM City (13), Hanoi (12), Vinh Long (12), Kien Giang (12), Ben Tre (11), and An Giang (10).
Vietnam on January 17 administered 1.18 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines. The country has so far conducted over 170.12 million Covid-19 vaccine shots, with over 72.67 million people having received two doses.
