80% of Vietnamese animal feed companies use banned substances

The survey was jointly conducted with the Ministry of Public Security on around 20 local animal feed companies mostly in the northern region and some localities in HCM City, Binh Duong and Dong Nai.

Common banned substances detected included Salbutamol, Clenbuterol and vat yellow which can all cause cancer.

Salbutamol is allowed to be imported into Vietnam for medicinal production only, but lax management has created chances for the use of this in animal feed production. Meanwhile, Clenbuterol has been prohibited in Vietnam for more than one year, but in reality still remains on sale.

According to Nguyen Van Viet, Chief Inspector of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, it is necessary to increase sanctions for violations related to using banned substances for animal feed production.
