Vietnam to tighten tourism oversight, strengthen safety measures

Vietnam will step up inspections and crack down on violations in the tourism sector while expanding digital tools to improve safety monitoring and information sharing.

According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), the measures are part of broader efforts to strengthen tourism management as international arrivals recover and the government seeks to improve visitor safety and service quality.

Speaking at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's second-quarter press briefing in Hanoi, VNAT said tourism remained a key driver of consumption, services, employment and the promotion of Vietnam's image overseas.

Vietnam welcomed a record 12.3 million international visitors in the first half of 2026, up 15 per cent from a year earlier and nearly half of its 25 million target for the year.

Domestic tourist trips reached 81 million, up 4.5 per cent year on year, while tourism revenue rose 9.8 per cent to VND 569 trillion (USD 21.7 billion), equivalent to just over half of the annual target.

In the second half of the year, VNAT would finalise strategies to promote Vietnamese tourism and cuisine overseas, develop health tourism and expand tourism linked to One Commune One Product (OCOP) goods.

The authority will also review the 2017 Tourism Law, update Vietnam's tourism development strategy and revise the national tourism system plan for the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2045.

Nguyen Thi Hoa Mai, deputy director general of VNAT said visitor safety must remain a top priority and requires close coordination among government agencies, local authorities and businesses.

Hoa added that VNAT had regularly instructed local authorities to strengthen inspections and ensure safety standards, particularly during peak travel seasons.

VNAT said it would intensify inspections and strictly handle violations, while expanding digital applications to support risk warnings, information sharing and coordination among relevant agencies.

The authority also plans to work with local governments to improve infrastructure, enhance service quality and strengthen safety standards for marine and inland waterway tourism to improve visitors' experience and safety.
