Humble researchers share passion for science

The winners of Vietnam's "Students Creative Science Research" competition shared their joy and sacrifice from their experience.

The four winners were overcome with joy for the award but also noted that the important thing is to gain more experience in scientific research and to make more friends.

They are, Ho Thi Le (student of 39A class), Than Van Hoe (student of 39B class), Vo Hoang Lang Du (student of 38A class) and Nguyen Thi Ninh Thuy (student of 38B class) from the Military Medical University and winners of the 2009 “Students Creative in Science Research” Competition organised by the Ministry of Education & Training, Ho Chi Minh Communist Young People Union Central Committee and Vietnam Union of Science & Techniques Associations (VUSTA).

All are studying in different classes but chose the same research subject by coincidence. A passion for scientific research brought them together.

For these young researchers, science will help them to achieve logical thought methods and find out new applications for daily life.

They spent a year and a half on their work. Hoe said, “Working together on a subject has made us become friends. We had many things to do but with our enthusiasm, we were able to overcome all challenges.”

“It’s surprising for us to get the first prize given by the Ministry and VUSTA. We were very happy to receive the “Creative Youth” title from the committee. However, our greatest joy was the time when we were granted the 'Excellent Students in Creativity in 2009' award from the Swiss Embassy,” the group shared.

All four students felt that they needed to be good students in order to be good researchers. Despite being very busy with scientific research, they still tried to find time to study and maintain their excellent results.

They spent all their free-time after class and even during summer holiday on their research.

Their research subject involves acid deoxyribonucleic (ADN) separation techniques using magnetic forces is a new field in Vietnam, so they did not have enough reference documents in Vietnamese. Each of them read and translated about 30 English books for their research themselves, all in order to achieve their scientific research goals.

The four shared a common opinion that winning the award is not what was most important; a passion for scientific research is what really inspires them.
