Ho Chi Minh City launches two more electric bus routes

Ho Chi Minh City has introduced two additional electric bus routes as part of its plan to modernise public transport and transition to a fully green bus network by 2030.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Centre, Route 41 began operating electric buses on June 20, while Route 57 switched to electric vehicles on June 15.

Route 41 now uses 60 seat electric buses and continues to operate between Mien Tay Bus Station and An Suong Bus Station via Bon Xa Intersection.

The route spans 22.15 kilometres, with each journey taking approximately 60 minutes. Services run from 5 am to 7.20 pm and provide 144 trips per day.

Route 57 has also replaced diesel powered buses with 60 seat electric vehicles while maintaining its existing route between Phuoc Binh Market and Hiep Binh High School.

The 13.1-kilometre route takes around 42 minutes to complete and operates daily from 5 am to 6.30 pm. Buses run at intervals of between 10 and 20 minutes, providing about 130 trips each day.

The Public Transport Management Centre said the introduction of electric buses would improve service quality and passenger comfort while reducing urban emissions and noise pollution.

The move forms part of the city's broader strategy to modernise its bus network, encourage greater use of public transport and advance sustainable and environmentally friendly urban mobility.

As of June, Ho Chi Minh City had a fleet of 2,432 buses.

Of those, 1,649 vehicles operate on electricity or other clean energy sources, accounting for 67.8 per cent of the system, while 785 buses continue to use diesel fuel, representing 32.2 per cent.

Under the city's roadmap, all public buses are expected to operate on electricity or clean energy before 2030.
