The vast pine forests surrounding Dalat remain one of the city's defining features, drawing visitors seeking nature, tranquillity and the cool climate of Vietnam's Central Highlands.
According to Huynh Ho Dai Nghia, a lecturer and researcher at Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, pine forests are inseparable from Dalat's cultural and natural identity.
The Dalat urban area is currently divided into five wards: Xuan Huong - Dalat, Lam Vien - Dalat, Langbiang - Dalat, Cam Ly - Dalat and Xuan Truong - Dalat. Official statistics show that the area is home to more than 20,000 hectares of pine forests.
Many of the forests were planted decades ago and are now protected under strict conservation and management programmes.
Nguyen Nhu Viet, head of the Lam Vien Protection Forest Management Board, which oversees Dalat's pine forests, said forest protection remains a key priority. The agency also regularly conducts reforestation programmes to expand and maintain forest coverage.
Pine-covered hills stretch across much of the city and its surrounding areas, creating the landscape that has long been associated with Dalat. Many mature trees have stood for decades and feature large trunks that dominate the forest scenery.
One of the most recognisable routes through the region is Prenn Pass, which winds through dense pine-covered hills and serves as a scenic gateway to the centre.
Open grasslands beneath pine canopies, particularly in Langbiang-Dalat Ward, have become popular destinations for camping, outdoor recreation and nature-based tourism.
Trong Bang, a visitor from Nghe An Province, said the experience of spending time among the pine forests offered a welcome escape from urban life.
"Being surrounded by greenery and breathing the fresh forest air helps my family feel relaxed and refreshed," he said.
Le Ngoc Hai Yen, a visitor from Ho Chi Minh City, described the forests as one of Dalat's most distinctive attractions.
"Dalat's pine forests have a romantic beauty and a character that few major cities can offer," she said.
