Teachers and students at the Tay Ho Primary School in the central city of Danang are offering free meals to disadvantaged people in the area.

Once a month, the teachers and students gather from 6 am to prepare hundreds of meals for low-income people for 10 am.

The free kitchen project was launched by teacher Truong Vinh Dang in 2009, using his own money. Dang has gradually received financial support from the school management board, other teachers, and donors, as well as students.

"Thanks to the contribution of many donors, we've been able to provide more and increasingly varied meals," teacher Dang shared. "We're opening once a month, offering between 300-350 meals."

Dang said that he uses the income from his bonsai garden to run the project while other donors are contributing money and labour.

"I'm very happy that the project is being supported by more people including students who come to help prepare the meals," he said.

According to the head of the Hai Chau District Department of Education and Training, Nguyen Duc Tu Anh, the free kitchen project has set a good community role model for local schools.

"Despite being held just once a month, the project has helped spread love and care for disadvantaged people among teachers, parents, and students over the past four years," he said. "Le Quy Don Primary School has also followed by organising their own kitchen to cook free meals for people in need."
