Hoi An craftsmen turn old fishing boats into furniture

Craftsmen in Hoi An are turning wood salvaged from old fishing boats into furniture and decorative items, giving discarded timber new life while preserving traditional woodworking skills.

Le Huynh Huyen, owner of Hoi An Wood in Danang, and Kim Bong carpenters turn reclaimed boat timber into furniture inspired by Wabi-sabi, a Japanese aesthetic celebrating imperfection and the passage of time.

The idea emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many Kim Bong carpenters faced a shortage of work while timber from decommissioned boats remained readily available.

Huyen said much of the wood from retired vessels was still usable, with old nail holes, faded paint and weathered surfaces giving it the rustic character his workshop sought.

Nguyen Huu Man, who works alongside Huyen, said reclaimed boat timber requires careful handling because individual pieces vary in size, shape and condition.

Workers must inspect, sort and treat the wood, removing nails, metal fittings and damaged sections before it can be used.

Rather than following standard designs, the craftsmen adapt each piece of furniture to the characteristics of the available timber.

"A nail hole can be left intact, but damaged sections that affect usability must be repaired or removed," said Le Cong Ly, a Kim Bong carpenter with 30 years of experience.

The finished products retain the original colours, grain patterns and signs of wear, reflecting the Wabi-sabi aesthetic while remaining sturdy and practical.

For Kim Bong craftsmen, the approach also offers a way to apply traditional skills, including wood selection, joinery and carving, to products designed for modern homes.

Huyen's workshop buys 10 to 12 old wooden boats each year, turning the recovered timber into thousands of indoor and outdoor furniture pieces and decorative products.

He said the benefits of reusing wood extend beyond recycling, as the furniture can be maintained and repaired to prolong its lifespan.

The workshop hopes to expand its market by developing products that meet consumer preferences while retaining the distinctive appearance of reclaimed timber.

Nguyen Minh Ly, vice chairman of the Hoi An Dong Ward People's Committee, said the initiative offered a new direction for local handicrafts while promoting environmental awareness and sustainable development.

He said local authorities supported plans to develop the workshop into a venue where visitors could view the products and learn about the reuse of discarded materials.
