DTiNews readers have sent over VND300 million (USD14,300) to support a 13-year-old orphaned boy in Hai Duong Province who is struggling to take care of his ill brother and sister.
Many people also donated food, clothes and books to the children. A charity group called 'Tay Trao Tay' visited Dat and gave him VND30 million in a bank account along with food and clothes. Bui Duc Tung, a representative of the group said, "We called for donations right after we read about his story. But after working with local authorities, we decided to give Dat a saving account instead of cash."
Dat receives donation from Tay Trao Tay
Dat will not be able to withdraw the money without agreement from both the local authorities and Tay Trao Tay. According to Tung, any help is precious but Dat is still underage and may face challenges in managing the money.
Upon receiving the gifts, Dat said, "I'm very happy because many people have visited us. I was given plenty of new clothes, books and even a new schoolbag."
Vu Duy Nhu, deputy head of Binh Minh Commune People's Committee said, "Many people came and asked about Dat, so we're willing to provide as much information as we can. Several people wanted to donate through us so we have recorded everything down in detail." Donations were also sent to Binh Minh Secondary School, where Dat studies.
Brother and sister with mental illness
Dat's aunt expressed her gratitude to the kind readers and Hoang Thi Lieu, vice headmistress of Dat at Binh Minh Secondary School thanked DTiNews readers for their help. The local authorities worked with Dat's family and agreed to let his brother and sister into a social protection centre.
Nguyen Duc Dat is the youngest son of a poor family in Binh Giang District. His father died when he was just one week old and his mother died early in 2014, leaving Dat with two ill brother and sister. Dat has relatives and two older sisters, but all of them are too poor to be able to offer the boy any help.
