On December 24, a Dantri/Dtinews reporter and representatives of Tran Phu Ward authorities visited the family of Hoang Thi Bao Ngoc, 14, to hand over VND 257,436,771 (about USD 10,700) raised by readers.

The donation followed a Dantri/Dtinews report highlighting the family’s hardship. Ngoc is the daughter of Hoang Thi Toan, 35. After separating from her first husband, Toan remarried Nguyen Quy in 2016, and later gave birth to four more children, now aged between one and nine.
Quy, 40, worked as a construction labourer with a modest income. After giving birth to her youngest child in 2024, Toan developed severe depression and her health deteriorated.
Tragedy struck again on October 17, when Quy was killed in a traffic accident on his way to work. Since his death, Toan’s condition has worsened, leaving her disoriented and prone to wandering.
With all five children still very young and unable to care for themselves, the family lost its main breadwinner and fell into extreme hardship. The children are now reliant on their 68-year-old grandmother.

Given the mother’s ongoing treatment and fragile health, and the grandmother’s advanced age, the family agreed to authorise the transfer of the donated funds to the Vietnam Fatherland Front committee of Tran Phu Ward.
The money will be placed in a long-term savings account until the children grow older. Interest generated will be withdrawn periodically by local officials and sent to the family to support the children’s care.

Local authorities said that since the family’s situation became public, many businesses and social organisations have also offered assistance. To date, pledged monthly support for Ngoc and her four younger siblings has exceeded VND 9 million (about USD 375).
On behalf of local authorities, Le Thi Phuong Chi, vice-chair of the Tran Phu Ward People’s Committee, expressed heartfelt thanks to Dantri readers.
“The generosity and compassion of readers have provided the family with significant support, giving the children strength to overcome hardship and continue their education,” she said.
