Reader donations help revive Dak Lak single mother’s life

A single mother in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak has begun rebuilding her life after reader donations helped her build a new home and raise livestock to support her two young children.

More than six months after receiving assistance, Le Thi Kim Huong, 33, in Duc Binh Commune and her two daughters are now living in a newly built house with improved living conditions.

Huong, who suffers from epilepsy and mild after-effects from a stroke, had previously struggled to raise her children alone while living in a deteriorating shack of just over 10 square metres.

Following coverage of her story, readers donated more than VND 163 million (USD 6,200) through Dantri/DTiNews’s charity programme and a further VND 17 million directly, bringing total support to more than VND 180 million.

Huong used part of the money to build a 35-square-metre house and buy breeding cattle, while saving the remainder for medical emergencies and future needs.

“Living in the new house has brought great joy to my children and me,” Huong said.

Local authorities said she had used the donations responsibly, continuing to work manual labour jobs while saving much of the remaining funds for emergencies.

Before receiving support, Huong struggled to raise the children alone despite suffering from epilepsy and mild after-effects from a stroke. The family lived in a deteriorating shack of just over 10 square metres that leaked in the rain and became stifling in hot weather.

Her elder daughter has developmental disabilities, adding to the family’s hardship, while Huong relied on temporary manual labour jobs to make ends meet.
