Born with serious birth defects, Nhan Ai was abandoned by her parents when she was just one month old. Doctors and nurses at Ho Chi Minh City’s Children Hospital 2 took her under their care.
Sadly, after 10 months of suffering, Nhan Ai passed away on September 6. Thousands of readers have either contacted us or left comments on our Dantri/DTiNews, expressing their grief. Many said the story brought them to tears.
After only 10 months of life, Nhan Ai did not have a chance to learn to crawl or speak like a normal child. Instead, she suffered from pain in her chest, infected skin, and difficulty breathing. However, for her last two months she received the warmth and kindness of thousands of people who sympathised with her story.
Dantri/DTiNews representative office in Ho Chi Minh City took care of Nhan Ai\'s funeral. Her body was cremated and her ashes have been preserved at Nhu Lai Pagoda. Many readers attended the funeral. All donations left behind that were intended for Nhan Ai will be used by the Compassionate Hearts Charity Fund to help children suffering from similar situations.
Abandoned babies drew readers support
A boy born with a deformity was taken to Ho Chi Minh City-based Children Hospital 2 on July 23 in a very serious condition. The boy’s name was unknown, but who was nicknamed “Nhan Nghia” by Dantri/DTiNews, received the love of readers and was on the way to recover after a first heart surgery. On October 11, Nhan Nghia was brought to Thu Duc Youth Village to get a second heart operation.
On October 8, a newborn baby, abandoned on a spongy box drifting on the river in Hung Thanh Ward, Cai Rang District, Can Tho City, was saved just in time. After an article about the boy on Dantri/DTiNews, many readers showed their sympathy with the boy, who was also nicknamed by the newspaper, as Nhan Hau. Within one day of the story running, a couple from Hau Giang Province adopted the boy.
After we got information about another abandoned newborn at Children Hospital 2, we sent reporters to Binh Duong to meet with the boy’s mother in order to find out the cause of the abandonment. It turned out that the young mother decided to give up her child due as a result of family pressure due to the fact she was still not married. Thanks to the advice of doctors and the encouragement of readers, the mother decided to take her baby back.
A similar story happened with a baby girl, also abandoned at Children Hospital 2. On December 3, readers persuaded the family to take accept and take care of her. She was then named Nguyen Hoang Ngoc Chau.
Hoang Van Quoc left at Bach Mai Hospital after a three month stay, to come back to his family. The father, Hoang Van Tho, had to leave him at the hospital because financial difficulties after his wife became seriously ill.
Saving the tiniest baby
A baby was born in the 28th week of the pregnancy, on September 11, 2010 at the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi. Her mother, 28, from the central province of Nghe An, died during labor due to to septic contamination of the blood. The baby, Hoang Thi Man, was moved to the Bach Mai hospital in critical condition. She was dirty and pale due to a prolonged shortage of oxygen. She didn’t cry and wasn’t breathing. The only sign of life was her heart beat, at 50-60 beats per minute. Her family had great financial difficulties. But thanks to the support of doctors and readers’ generosity, Man was revived.
Old woman reunites with her family after 31-years of homelessness
After an article about an old woman who had no family, posted on Dantri/DTiNews and after a programme aired on Vietnam Television, her children living in the south recognised their mother after 31 years. She had a rough time during those years spent away from her family, having to sleep on streets. With the financial support of readers, she was able to reunite with her family.
Returning life to a seven-month old boy
A disabled couple, the blind husband, and a wife with deformed spinal column were sure that their life would be a dark one after they had a boy, Ho Van Dieu, who suffered from a blood disease. After their situation was posted on Dantri/DTiNews generosity once more poured in, allowing their son to get monthly medical check-ups and the necessary treatment. Now the boy has recovered.
Smiling again
Another article about “the woman who wanted to give up her daughter,” also stirred the hearts of thousands of our readers. The situation was quite a difficult one for Mrs. Nguyen Thi An in Danang. She’d always thought that she suffered from fatal diseases.
After our readers heard her story and her symptoms, they encouraged her to go back to the doctor and get another medical opinion. In the end, the disease wasn’t as dangerous as she’d thought. She wanted to be able to continue taking care of her daughter. The money donated by readers, she used to send her daughter to school. DTiNews gave them VND5 million (USD250).
The shoeshine boy
Skinny, with dark eyes, many of his customers thought that Nguyen Van Sao was a drug addict, and so shied away from using his services. What they didn’t know was that he was living with congenital heart disease, until Dantri/DTiNews wrote about his situation. Thanks to readers’ donations he has got the medical attention he needed.
14-year old boy brutally tortured
On April 29, 2010, police in Dam Doi District, Ca Mau Province, prosecuted a couple for brutally torturing a 14-year old boy named Nguyen Hao Anh. The boy worked for their shrimp farm. Deeply sympathising with Hao Anh, Dantri/DTiNews readers visited him and offered gifts. Currently, he is being cared for at Ca Mau social sponsoring centre. Dantri readers gave him a total VND29.4 million (USD1,470).
A 3-year old boy falls into boiling pot
After his father crashed into a boiling soup pot put on pavement while taking him on motorbike, a three-year old boy named Le Dai Loi suffered from serious burns on up to 60% of his body on January 21, 2010. As soon as the article about the case was published by Dantri/DTiNews, hundreds of readers sent money amounting to of VND217.47 million (USD10,873) to help the boy. After two-week treatment, Loi is out of danger.
Five-year old with nobody to take care of him
Mai Xuan Truong has been a pillar to his family since he was five years old. His father left home and mother, who suffered from cancer, was unable to take care of him. Millions of readers felt moved after reading the story about the boy on Dantri/DTiNews.They gave more than VND1 billion (USD50,000) to the family.
The father finally came back home to take care of his wife and son, but the mother died. Now father and son live in a house built thanks to benefactors’ supports. Last September, Truong started the first grade.
Help to save the three-year old girl from cruel nanny
Just hours after a clip exposing a Binh Duong babysitter’s cruel treatment of a little girl taking a bath on November 23, 2010, local authorities started the investigation. The clip showed the babysitter pulling the little girl\'s hair and splashing cold water in her face and up her nose. She also stomped down on the girl’s back (the girls was face down on a concrete floor) and yelled at her. Reporters cooperated with police to find the woman, who ended up being 54-year old Tran Thi Phung.
Phung’s excuse: Ngan had often refused to take a bath, so she had to be harsh. She finally admitted she’d been treating the little girl in such a way for nearly a year.
Phung was sentenced to two years in prison on child abuse charges. She also had to pay compensation to the victim’s family, amounting to VND5 million (USD250).
