>> Dantri/DTiNews builds another bridge in Can Tho
Construction on the fifth bridge, initiated by Dantri/DTiNews, was kicked off in Thanh Hoa Province on November 3.
Delegates start construction on the bridge
The concrete construction will replace the very dangerous temporary bridge used by people in The Vinh Village, Tung Lam Commune, Tinh Gia District, for many years.
From early morning, hundreds of local residents and children gathered to see their dreams come true.
The Vinh Village resident Ho Sy Vuong said, “I have lived here for many years and seen the difficulties facing people, particularly children, when using the old bridge. We are too poor to build a new one. We are very happy to see that children will be safe going to school.”
Nguyen Duc Hau, a 9th grade student of Tung Lam Secondary School, shared, "It was more risky for small children to travel across the old bridge. Now, I’m happy because I’ll not have to worry about accidents when using the bridge.”
Pham Dang Quyen, Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said that the kindness of donors had brought safety to locals. He also urged contractors to ensure the 17m long bridge is available for use before the lunar new year in 2012.
According to Dantri/DTiNews Editor-in-chief Pham Huy Hoan, the bridge cost VND312 million (USD14,928), with VND100 million (USD4,784) donated by Vietnamese American Vuong Kim Ngoc, VND100 million from the “Swing for the kids” golf tournament fund, VND20 million (USD957) from the Thanh Hoa Study Promotion Fund and VND28.050 million (USD1,339) from other readers of DTiNews.
This is the fifth bridge that Dantri/DTiNews and the Vietnam Study Promotion Fund have built, joining four others in Kien Giang, Kon Tum, Can Tho and Quang Nam provinces.
Individuals and organisations used the opportunity to grant scholarships to poor students in Tung Lam Commune.
