Dantri Bridge replaces old make-shift bridge
Hundreds of students and local people showed up to the opening ceremony in Tan Phu Commune, Hau Giang Province. Hai Hung, One resident said, "I was so happy to hear the kids tell their parents to visit the new bridge. I've seen many people, especially students, fall into the river and I couldn't do anything because I'm too old. This new bridge that Dantri/DTiNews and Vietnam Study Promotion Fund has built is like a dream to us."
The old bridge, which was called Xeo Co was made of old and rotten wood. In addition, the slippery surface during rains was the cause of many falling into the river. Deputy Secretary of Tan Phu Commune Truong Van Mi said, "Tan Phu's infrastructure still has many shortcomings. One of our desires was to replace Xeo Co Bridge with a concrete one. For decades it seemed to be only a wish."
The total cost of the bridge was VND279 million, of which the Shinnyo-en, a Japanese organisation, donated over USD10,700 (VND225 million) through the Study Promotion Fund, while the rest was given by Long My District authorities.
Pham Huy Hoan, Editor-in-Chief of Dantri/DTiNews, as well as the head of the Vietnam Study Promotion Fund, said, "The bridge was built in three months. All of the work and donations that have gone into this project were from real kindness, which included organisations such as Shinnyo-en Organisation. For the past five years, they have helped to build two classrooms in Ha Tinh and Ha Nam provinces,as well as provide nearly 1,000 scholarships to students across the country."
On the same day, Shinnyo-en allotted 30 scholarships, each worth VND500,000, to the disadvantaged children. The local authorities also granted 40 grants to outstanding students. According to Shinnyo-en, they plan to build another bridge named after Dantri in Ben Tre Province next year.
