The baby girl, weighing 3.6 kilos, was born at 7.25am by c-section to a 38-year-old woman from Ninh Binh Province.

The happy mother said that she had been trying to have a baby over the last 16 years.

This is the first surrogate baby born in Vietnam after local hospitals started implementing surrogacy technologies.

Since the technology was made available, hospitals have received more than 100 applications for the procedure, according to Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Viet Tien.

Eligible surrogates must be between the ages of 21 and 40 and be physically healthy. They must already have at least one child. If she is married, she must also receive her husband's approval to take part in the surrogacy case.

While more and more surrogacy babies will soon be born in Vietnam, the number of surrogacy procedures falls short of demand.
