Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN said 2015 is an important year as the UN is working hard to build a post-2015 development agenda aiming to reach a climate change agreement as a part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Sustainable development will not be achieved if climate change challenges are not controlled and vice versa, Nga said, adding that sustainable development goals will provide a framework and leverage for a climate change deal.
The ambassador briefed the delegates on Vietnam’s efforts in the related fields, notably the implementation of national strategies on climate change and green growth.
The Vietnamese diplomat urged he international community to provide assistance for Vietnam in terms of finance or technology and capacity-building.
Attendees agreed that climate change is one of the biggest challenges to sustainable development and countries need to focus on reaching a global agreement on climate change during the 21st Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP21) in Paris late this year.
They also underscored the need to pool resources for coping with climate change, including implementing a commitment to contribute US$100 billion to the Green Climate Fund.
