Heavy rain is forecast to persist across HCM City and southern Vietnam through September 24, with some areas expected to receive more than 170 mm over 48 hours.
The Southern Regional Hydro-Meteorological Centre forecast moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms across the region on September 20, with very heavy rain in some areas.
Thunderstorms could bring lightning and strong winds.
Intense rain has already affected much of southern Vietnam. Between September 18 and 19, rainfall reached 110.2 mm in Long Dien in HCM City, 76.8 mm in Nui Ba in Tay Ninh and 68.2 mm in Huong My in Vinh Long.
Other areas recorded 55 mm in My Tho, Dong Thap, 50.6 mm in Binh Long, Dong Nai, and 46 mm in Tran Van Thoi, Ca Mau.
From September 19 to 21, widespread rainfall of 80-150 mm is forecast across the south, with more than 170 mm possible in some areas.
The spell of heavy rain is expected to last through September 24.
Forecasters warned that prolonged downpours could cause flooding in urban and low-lying areas and increase the risk of flash floods and landslides in steep terrain.
