The arrival of the newly approved vaccine, Qdenga, in September 2024 is expected to affect the fight against dengue fever significantly.

Produced by Japanese drugmaker Takeda Pharmaceutical Co, Qdenga was approved for use in the European Union, the UK, Brazil, Argentina, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia.

Vietnam has recorded high numbers of dengue infections every year, with more than 200,000 cases documented per year, including dozens of fatalities.

So far this year, the country has logged more than 16,800 infections, including one fatality. The most common types of virus are DEN-1 and DEN-2, DEN-2 accounting for 88 percent of infections in 2023 and 70 percent in 2024, according to the Ministry of Health.
