Vietnam acknowledged an active UNSC member

Working as a non-permanent member for two years, Vietnam has made considerable contributions to the performance of the UN Security Council.

Working as a non-permanent member for two years, Vietnam has made considerable contributions to the performance of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), said a senior diplomat.

Vietnam will conclude its two-year term of non-permanent membership of the UNSC, including two months acting as the Chair.

According to Deputy FM, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, chief representative of Vietnam to the UN, over the past two years, Vietnam has made considerable contributions to the performance of the UNSC.

Working as the UNSC Chair in July 2008 and October 2009, Vietnam opened many debates on issues of global concern, notably the October 5 open debate on women, peace and security, presided over by Vietnamese Deputy PM, FM Pham Gia Khiem.

Concluding the debate, the UNSC approved Resolution 1889 drafted by Vietnam, putting forwards a series of solutions to protect legitimate rights and highlight role of women in all stages of peace process.

In these two months, the UNSC also discussed and decided many issues relating to hot spots worldwide, including Somalia, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Chad and the Central African Republic, Afghanistan, Iraq, Middle East, Lebanon, Kosovo, Haiti and others.

Vietnam’s active and responsible contributions have been highly praised by many countries.
