Two Danang firms accused of software piracy

An inspection force from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recently detected software piracy at two big companies in Danang.

These are the first firms in the city found to have infringed on software copyrights.

Danapha Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company (DANAPHA) was found to have used a large amount of pirated software, including Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, Symatec Antivirus, and AutoDesk.

Meanwhile, AAC Auditing and Accounting Company LTD has used pirated Microsoft software, such as Windows, Office and Server. The company has a server connected to 35 stations, all installed with counterfeit Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Offices.

According Vietnam News Agency, the Copyright Office of Vietnam under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Business Software Alliance have launched a campaign to raise awareness of copyright law.

Last year they conducted investigations on 111 businesses across the country, finding that around 98% of them had some sort of copyright violation. So far this year, inspection teams have investigated 21 businesses, mostly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In Vietnam, violators of copyright law are subject to a fine of VND50-500 million (USD2,400-24,000).
