District 1 People’s Committee deputy chairman Doan Ngoc Hai on Monday said the authorities held a meeting with the Vien Dong Investment Export Import Co, Ltd on the same day to discuss the incident, during which the company agreed to send an apology letter to the female tourist in question.

If the tourist, who is yet to be identified, is no longer in Vietnam, the company will have to contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and relevant agencies to determine her identity to send the apology letter and the compensation amount, Hai said.

On April 4, some photos of a middle-aged female foreign tourist with a bloody face were shared on some social networks claiming that she stumbled and fell face down after hitting an iron hook at the junction of Le Loi-Nam Ky Khoi Nghia streets in HCM City. The woman received first-aid from her friends but was obviously shocked.

According to authorities in District 1, the iron hooks were installed in the area by Vien Dong Import-Export Investment Company for the lighting at recent street art festivals. Local said that dozens of pedestrians including several foreign tourists have fallen hitting these hooks.

The Vien Dong Company and authorities in 10 wards have been asked to look for and remove all these hooks to ensure safety for pedestrians.
