Superstitions exploited to deceive H'Mong group

A small group of instigators have used superstitious stories to deceive H'Mong people of Dien Bien Province to gather in the forest.

Over the past few days, a small group of instigators have used superstitious stories to deceive H\'Mong people of Muong Nhe District in the northwestern mountainous province of Dien Bien to gather in the forest, according to the Chairman of the Dien Bien Provincial People\'s Committee, Mua A Son.

Son told the Vietnam News Agency that people including women, the elderly and children had been tricked into going into the forest for the so called "establishment of a H\'Mong Kingdom". Due to severe weather and unhygienic conditions, many people have fallen ill and one child has died from disease.

These activities were illegal, causing instability to local people\'s lives and production while disturbing security and order in the region, he said.

To deal with the situation, local authorities and mass organisations have sent cadres to persuade the people not to believe the story and local authorities are also providing food and medical support for people returning home.

The situation in the district has stabilised and local authorities and the public are preparing for the elections of the 13th National Assembly and the People\'s Councils at all levels for the 2011-2016 term as planned.

A number of foreign news agencies have recently made groundless reports about the incident, said Son, affirming the reports were wrong with ill intentions.
