The Hanoi Medical University Hospital together with the Institute of Odonto - Stomatology have successfully operated on six children with cleft lip syndrome. The children were beneficiaries of the “For Children’s Smiles” charity programme.
The procedures, which aim to repair the cleft in the children’s lip or palate, were performed consecutively over a period of 7 hours. All 6 young patients were reported to be in stable condition following the operations.
The 6 children were selected as recipients of the surgery by doctors from the two hospitals, who had previously examined a number of candidates nominated for treatment by Operation Smile and Consultancy and Aid (OSCA) and Vinh Yen’s Red Cross Association.
The primary function of the charity programme “For Children’s Smiles” is to offer fully subsidised operations for children with cleft lip through the month of June. In addition, charity organisers plan to visit and bring gifts to child victims of Agent Orange at the Hoa Binh Children’s Village in Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi, as well as to patients at the HIV Center for Children in Ba Vi District, Hanoi.
Every year, thousands of babies with cleft lip or cleft palate are born in Vietnam. It is hoped that the careful expansion of this charity programme, along with support from community, may allow all Vietnamese children of the future to be able to smile again.
