Restaurant in hot water over ‘bikini girls’

Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has fined a restaurant USD1,920 for hiring ‘promotional girls’ to wear bikinis.

Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has fined a restaurant USD1,920 for hiring ‘promotional girls’ to wear bikinis.

The fine was issued on May 12. According to the department, wearing revealing clothes to serve customers is apparently in conflict with Vietnam’s traditions and customs. The fine is the highest sanction.

Nguyen Thanh Phong, chief inspector from the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the restaurant owner was uncooperative. He said, "He refused to sign the report and decision on the fine. We proposed Cau Giay District to withdraw the business licence and only re-issue the licence when he follows all procedures and regulations."

Bikini-clad waitresses at a restaurant in Hanoi

On May 8, a number of women in bikinis showed up to serve customers at a restaurant in Cau Giay District. The representative of the restaurant said that it was a special event to thank their customers and the waitresses were promotional staff hired just for the day.

The Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism previously issued the same fine to an electronic goods shop employing women wearing bikinis. A representative claimed the shop was working with a partner to make a sex education video series.
